Bigger revenue, smaller slice of the economy 📉
Stats SA released its 2024 Construction Industry Survey this week, and the numbers pull in 2 directions at once. Income from construction rose to R605.6 billion in 2024, up an average of 8.9% a year since 2020. Profit margins hit their highest point in a decade, at 4.8%, led by site preparation companies posting 13.2%.
But the sector's share of South Africa's GDP kept sliding. Down to 2.4% in 2024, from 2.5% the year before, and from 3.9% a decade ago.
Employment tells the same story. The industry now employs 539,056 people, up from 479,071, 4 years ago, but still below the 592,125 employed back in 2017. Small businesses carry the weight too. SMMEs account for 78.6% of everyone working in the sector.
More money moving through construction.
Less of the economy it represents.
That is where the industry sits right now.

CIDB officially launched its new Certificate in Construction Management on 8 July 2026 in Bloemfontein, part of a national rollout across the Free State, KwaZulu Natal, and the Eastern Cape. The course is delivered with universities including the University of Johannesburg, Durban University of Technology, and Walter Sisulu University, and is built to help contractors sharpen the business and project skills needed to climb the CIDB grading system.
It sits alongside the R300 million Construction Fund, launched by CIDB and SEDFA in May 2026 to help small and emerging contractors access finance. The need is real. Survey data shared at a recent Gauteng roadshow showed that 24% of contractors cite access to finance as their biggest barrier to growth, and 53% struggled to secure a loan or guarantee in the past year.
The fund prioritises black owned, women owned, youth owned, and township based businesses, along with businesses owned by people with disabilities. SEDFA handles the financial products, CIDB handles regulatory compliance and sector development.
Training plus funding, aimed squarely at the emerging contractor. If either has kept you on the sidelines, now is the time to check your eligibility.

Cold mornings are the enemy of fresh concrete 🥶
South Africa is deep in winter, and early morning site temperatures across the Highveld, the Free State, and even parts of the Cape interior are regularly dropping below 5°C. Concrete needs to stay above that mark to cure properly.
Pour or cure it colder than that and the hydration reaction slows down or stalls completely. You end up with weak, chalky concrete that never reaches its design strength, and cracks that only show up months later.
A few things help. Avoid pouring first thing in the morning when the ground and the air are at their coldest, and rather wait until mid morning once the site has warmed.
Cover fresh pours overnight with insulating blankets, hessian, or plastic sheeting to trap heat and hold moisture. Use warm mixing water where you can, and consider a small dose of accelerator for slabs poured in genuinely cold conditions.
And never pour onto frozen or frost covered ground. Give it time to thaw and dry first.
