Welcome to The Build Brief

South Africa lost jobs almost everywhere this week, except in construction.

Unemployment climbed to 33.6%, the highest reading since 2022, but construction was 1 of only 3 sectors that actually added jobs.

Meanwhile a R3.3 billion, 20 year redevelopment just kicked off at the Port of Durban, with real money set aside for small business.

Good pipelines mean nothing if your paperwork is not ready when the tender opens.

So this week, the sector bucking the trend, the port project worth watching, and 2 free tools for running a growing crew. 👇

Construction added 39,000 jobs while the rest of the economy shrank 📈

Stats SA released its Quarterly Labour Force Survey this week, and the headline number is grim. South Africa’s official unemployment rate climbed to 33.6% in the second quarter of 2026, up from 32.7%, the highest reading since 2022. The number of unemployed people rose by 345,000 to 8.5 million, while overall employment fell by 16,000 to 16.7 million.

Youth unemployment is worse still, up to 47.4%, meaning 5 million young people are out of work.

But construction was 1 of only 3 sectors that actually grew. Trade added the most jobs at 70,000, construction followed with 39,000, and finance added 11,000. Community and social services lost the most, down 57,000, followed by mining, down 26,000.

Formal sector employment fell by 41,000 and household employment fell by 9,000, while the informal sector grew by 34,000. Mpumalanga added the most jobs of any province, up 41,000, while the Western Cape lost the most, down 48,000.

Construction is not immune to the broader slowdown, but right now it is one of the few places in the economy where hiring is actually happening.

If you are growing your crew while everyone else is cutting, you are in a stronger position than you might think.

One of 3 sectors growing. Worth remembering next time hiring feels hard.

A R3.3 billion port redevelopment just kicked off in Durban 🚢

20 years, one terminal, real money set aside for small business.

Transnet National Ports Authority has signed a 20 year concession with FPT Group for the redevelopment and operation of the fresh produce terminal at the Port of Durban’s Point Precinct. The terminal is projected to increase throughput to 1.691 million tonnes a year by 2028, stabilising around 1.906 million tonnes by 2034.

This is the terminal citrus and other fresh produce exporters rely on, so the upgrade matters well beyond the port itself. Better cold chain infrastructure at this scale ripples through farming, packing, transport, and export logistics.

The part worth your attention is the money set aside for redevelopment. Around R397 million has been committed to skills development, small business support, and regional economic initiatives during the build phase alone. Over the full 20 year concession, an estimated R3.3 billion is earmarked for supplier development and broader economic participation.

A specific construction start date has not been announced, but the concession is signed and the funding commitments are public.

That kind of set aside money does not distribute itself. It goes through formal enterprise and supplier development channels, which means registering early puts you ahead of contractors who wait until the tenders are already live.

Worth flagging to any subcontractor or supplier in the KwaZulu Natal logistics and cold chain space specifically.

A 20 year concession is a long runway. Getting registered now costs you an afternoon. Waiting could cost you the opportunity.

CSD gets you in the door, Transnet’s own portal gets you the work 🚪

A few editions back we covered registering on the Central Supplier Database. That is still step 1 for any government or state entity work, Transnet included. But Transnet also runs its own systems on top of the CSD, and this is the part people miss.

Transnet’s new eSupplier Portal is where you actually register profiles, view live opportunities, and manage transactions once you are CSD registered. It replaced the old paper based process and now covers every operating division, ports, freight rail, pipelines, and properties, in one place.

Separately, Transnet’s Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme offers funding and mentorship to qualifying small businesses, on top of straightforward vendor registration. It is aimed specifically at EMEs and QSEs, so if your business turns over R10 million or less a year, it is worth checking your eligibility.

Neither of these guarantees you work on a project like the Durban terminal redevelopment. But being registered and visible when the packages go out is the difference between hearing about an opportunity and actually bidding on it.

CSD gets you eligible. Transnet’s own portal gets you seen.

The Digital Toolbox 🛠️🤖

The free SA payroll tool for a growing crew 🧑‍🔧

If construction is one of the few sectors actually hiring right now, your admin needs to keep up with your headcount.

openHR is a proudly South African, cloud based payroll and HR platform with a genuinely free plan, not a trial. Unlimited employees, unlimited payslips, no hidden limits.

It handles payslips on any pay cycle, SARS and Labour Department compliance built in, and permit tracking, all without needing a dedicated HR person. Built specifically around South African legislation, not adapted from a US or UK product.

Genuinely free, unlimited employees, built for South African compliance.

The free tool for managing drawings on a growing project 📐

Bigger pipelines mean bigger drawing sets, and a printed set that is out of date by the time it reaches site is how mistakes happen.

Fieldwire is a free plan viewer and markup tool, with a genuinely usable free tier for teams up to 3 people. Everyone works from the same set of drawings, on web, iOS, or Android.

Drop a task pin directly on the drawing, attach a photo, assign it to a trade, and set a due date, so the task lives exactly where the work needs to happen. Markups, redlines, and progress photos stay attached to the drawing version they belong to.

Export as built drawings in a click at the end of the project, instead of reconstructing them from memory.

Free for teams up to 3, no paper sets left behind on site.
